You work backwards

18 x 22 = 396 

SO then you have to figure out how to get that product using the difference of two squares

(x+y)(x-y) = x^2 - y^2

(x+y)(x-y)= 396

(x+y)(x-y)= 400 -4

(x+y)(x-y)= (20^2)-(2^2)

(x+y)(x-y)=(20+2)(20-2)

so there you go! :)
